Best Giver, Best Gift

Christmas is all about giving gifts! The natural response to a given gift is rejoicing and gratitude – the greater the gift, the greater the delight and appreciation. We also naturally place a higher value on a gift given from somebody of higher importance (you appreciate what your parents or children give you more than what a stranger on the street might give you).

Kay’s five disciples pictured with their Christmas tops (from left to right: Lololo, Xolile, Nomvuyo, Sihle, Happiness, and Kay)

No matter what gift we give or receive, be it a shirt, a bicycle, a goat, a monetary gift, whatever, we know that all these gifts are temporal, hence, a temporal response. We’re not going to be satisfied and thankful for a gift we received last year, right?

Now who is of greater importance than God? And what greater gift is there than the precious blood of Christ? For in His blood we have a “priceless inheritance” in heaven (1 Peter 1:4).

There is no one greater and nothing greater than God and the blood of Jesus (1 Peter 1:19). So, what is our natural response to the greatest giver and the greatest gift ever? Both the giver and the gift are eternal, enduring forever, never to expire or go old. Here’s our response, as found in 1 Peter 1:8, “…you greatly rejoice (celebrate, delight) with joy inexpressible (indescribable, beyond words, overwhelming) and full of glory.” Oh what a response!

Is this our response? Honestly, I often forget what a great giving God I have, and what a great gift of Jesus I have. Please join us in celebrating the good news of Jesus, the salvation that His blood bought for us, the gift of eternal life.

Andy Stanley says, “We all live forever… somewhere.” Because of the blood of Jesus, we have access to God, to live in His presence forever. All you have to do is place your faith in Jesus and call upon His name to be saved (Romans 10:9-10). Once you do that, watch out. The most abundant, rich, and satisfying life is coming from Jesus (John 10:10). All He asks of you is, “follow Me and be My disciple” (Matthew 9:9, Mark 2:14, Luke 5:27).

Merry Christmas, and have a Happy New Year!
